Guide to Friendica

Switch to Friendica and forget about Facebook, Twitter and the like.

I've been with Friendica for a while now and I recently got my own instance. What can I say? I absolutely love it! Also the developers behind Friendica (not only them) are super friendly 🙂

This article is about how you too can move to Friendica.

Create an account to try it out.

There are many "instances', so you can choose which one you want to join and now that I have my own instance you're welcome to create an account there. Of course you can also host your own instance on a server and through cool tools like yunohost it's getting easier and easier!

After registration you will receive an e-mail with the password. After you have logged in with it, you can change it in the settings.

Optimize your account.

You can now set up your account in the settings. It works much better than Facebook, is easier to understand and very clean. You can block content based on language and words, you can choose who can see your posts, and so on. It's up to you how you set it up. Take it easy. No stress. You don't have to do anything if you don't want to, and you can change things in time. it's your baby

Start following people and organizations.

That's what you're here for. But how can you find other people and organizations? Don't be like a hungry bear that goes into a house and wants to eat whatever it finds, and when it doesn't find much, it walks away. Be a nice, relaxed and sensible bear and you will get very good food and not get fat in this house. For example, for starters, you can too mir and ours TROM page follow. Then add more people. Let it grow slowly and organically. You can search people by interests (keywords) in the contact settings.

Let it grow slowly, and I mean that seriously. You can be taken advantage of by Facebook and the insane influx of information that engulfs your entire life. This way you can start fresh and meet new people. It's like moving from New York (Facebook) to a nice little village. You'll see, life is better there ;).

The great part that keeps me personally with Friendica.

Friendica opens the doors to pretty much every federal network. Suppose you find a Mastodon account in the wild. Copy the URL into your Friendica search bar and just follow it. Do the same for any other federated network. Now you can interact with these people (send private messages, see posts in your feed, comment, like, share posts, etc.).

Follow websites!

Yes! You can do that too. You can follow pretty much any website (since most have an RSS feed). Copy ours https://www.verzeichnis.handelsfrei.org/rss page or any other you like into the contact page and just follow it. You will see the posts in your feed whenever these websites post new material. How cool! You can also change the settings for each of these websites individually. For example, you can customize how often you get updates from them, whether you want to get notified when they post something new, or customize how the posts should look.

Sometimes, if those websites support it, you can see their entire articles in your feed so you don't have to go to their websites. I recommend you to select the “Get Info and Keywords” option so you can see their posts as a synopsis and link to the original article. Finally, if you wish, you can mirror the posts of these websites on your profile as forwarded posts. Or as your own posts.

Follow Twitter!

If you have a Twitter account, now is the time to stop using twitter.com and instead use your Friendica. Go to Settings - Social Networks and click on the Twitter tab. Connect to your Twitter account (easy - takes a few seconds). Now you should select "Allow posting to Twitter" and "Import the remote timeline". Why? Because now if you want to follow someone on twitter, you can just paste the twitter url, the whole thing, into the same contact page and then follow the twitter account. And you will see the posts in your timeline. Very easily.

You can reply to and interact with these Twitter accounts from Friendica. awesome

Follow the whole internet!

With the RSS-Bridge you can follow Youtube channels, WordPress plugin updates, daily Wikipedia articles or whatever you want: VK pages, Vimeo, photos from Unsplash, you can even follow Twitter users and pages without an account or even follow hashtags... .you can follow public Telegram groups or when new stuff is added to the BitTorrent network (e.g. if you want to know when a new episode from any docuseries you like is available on torrents). Follow sub-reddits, or even PornHub; follow the latest releases on FDroid and sooo much more. This RSS bridge is amazing and you can use it as a proxy to connect your Friendica to pretty much the whole internet.

So yes... slowly you can add friends to your account and follow websites/organizations/projects that you want to follow. Create a stream of what you love from across the web.

SEE YOU AT FRIENDICA!
