not ego

We live in a world with quite a lot of problems and in my opinion there is no getting around working towards a more positive future - and that can only be done by people working together and helping each other.

Many corporations and entrepreneurs (Musk, Bezos and the rest of them) seem to want a bright future for humanity, but fail to realize that the problem is the structure of our society. We could already be living in a world where there is no hunger, no war, no climate change, no extinction of species etc., but that cannot work because the structure of a company is the problem because it is designed for profit.

So trying to change something in today's world with social entrepreneurship or other ideas will not work unless we change the structure of our society.

Because it's nothing new that companies (and politicians) have already made so many promises to win people's trust. And it's also nothing new that this trust is broken again and again. The latest example is Apple, which sells itself as a particularly privacy-friendly company. The fact that maybe this is not the case was shown again today approved27. January 2022

I wonder when that point will be reached where more and more people will realize it's time to move on and on non-trade goods and services to work.

I already have one Articles about YunoHost written and would like to show you what you can do with it:

Seek

Every time you search something on Google, data is collected about you and you are shown advertisements. SearX is a meta search engine that collects search results from various search engines (which you can customize) and presents you with the best search results.

For example, this is what my SearX instance looks like and with a little know-how and YunoHost you can also customize your search engine the way you want 🙂

files

You can easily manage your files via Nextcloud. After installing NextCloud through YunoHost, you can use a NextCloud-App synchronize your pictures, videos, documents etc. on your desktop or mobile phone.

For example, I have NextCloud with me on my Pixel 4a GrapheneOS installed and automatically synchronize the images on my server (my cloud 😉 ).

social network

I refuse to respond to the harmful behaviors of Facebook, Meta and other data collection and advertising platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok etc. and have my own social network through YunoHost – Friendica!

And not only does this work just as well as Facebook, but it's completely ad-free and data-collecting-free, giving me the freedom to design it the way I want:

Also, with Friendica I can pretty much follow the whole internet. There's such a cool thing going on RSS-Feed calls and many websites have an RSS feed. You can easily enter this at Friendica and conveniently get the latest news in your Friendica feed.

Pixelfed

I know Facebook isn't cool at all these days and most young people are more on Instagram. But there is now a cooler alternative to that too – Pixelfed!

Not only does it look just as cool as Instagram, but it also doesn't collect your data, run ads or harms your mental health. A nice place for the pictures of you and your friends 🙂

notes

About the app Standard Notes I manage my notes - securely encrypted on my cell phone + laptop and synchronized with my cloud 🙂

Other apps

Overall there is more than 100 Apps on YunoHost, which you can use to do anything: share files, collaborate on a document in real time, create polls, create meetings, and so much more. YunoHost is really really cool!

Why all this?

Why would people start hosting their own services?

Don't worry, not everyone has to have their own server, since it's a small effort, which of course also takes time. But since tools like YunoHost make it easier and easier, you can make yourself independent and control your data yourself.

Also - and I think that's the coolest thing about it - you can give the services to others trade free offer. This is something we do with the TROM services 🙂

Then…

...we must not forget that the structure of our society is based on trade and this structure massively limits the potential of humanity. And when more and more people have trade-free access to what they need and want, there will be an explosion of cooperative, smart, and laid-back behaviors that can only propel humanity into a saner future. Wouldn't we all benefit from this? 🙂

Thanks again to YunoHost and all the developers behind all the apps that are freely available. That's the cool thing about free software - take it and make something cool out of it 😉

4 things that amazed me (2)

1. Electronic music

I am amazed every time anew how I get into the flow state through electronic music, forget everything around me and completely sink into the moment.

Basically I translated all the TROM books with electronic music in the background. At some point I created a Soundcloud account and have been listening to all sorts of sets since then. Electronic music is very diverse, it goes from very slow to extremely fast, whereby I prefer to listen to deephouse, slowhouse and downtempo, but then also to techno, melodic techno and progressive house.

Some of them can't do anything with electronic music and that's okay, of course, but somehow I really like them.

Here are 3 tracks that I would like to share because I think they are really nice - but of course there are 1000 others that I also like 😉

Joep Mencke – Trust The Wild
Victor Norman – Hymn (Bernstein Remix)
Rampue- Stop Thinking (Katerblau Live)

2. That there are billions of people out there who do things without asking for anything in return and you will never hear from them.

Every day there are so many people who do things voluntarily. Be it doing the shopping for the neighbors or the grandparents, writing code, donating money, saving food, sharing knowledge or helping people in whatever way.

We also have one a book about it and it's crazy how pretty much everything in our society is measured primarily in terms of money and volunteering is not viewed that way.

3. That human behavior is very copy & paste.

It might sound funny, but it's true. I'll use myself as an example: I grew up in a small village where there is a football club. My dad played there, so I started playing football when I was a little kid. My dad always watched the sports show, so I watched the sports show too. Friends played tennis, so I took up tennis too. I read on blogs that a lot of people travel, so after I graduate from high school I set off with my backpack. And so forth.

Think about traditional festivals / events - Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Oktoberfest, Mardi Gras / Carnival, go drinking. But also wear AirPods, have the latest Nike shoes, take photos of the food on Instagram, watch dance videos on TikTok and then dance yourself - copy & paste.

Kind of amazing. Of course, not everything is taken over by everyone and of course such habits change over time, but I still find it amazing!

It's no different for me either 🙂

That brings me to the next point:

4. Social change

It is obvious that the world is in the midst of a radical change.

Investing money in renewable energies, buying an electric car, eating less meat ... These are all well-intentioned ideas, but if the basic structure of our society is the problem then we need to focus on that. We're talking about human behavior here and that always seems to be something that isn't talked about. How about if we create a more sensible environment for people where they are no longer stressed and have more free time?

How about trade-free food, trade-free medical care, trade-free access to public transport and trade-free access to accommodation? Sometimes these are progressive ideas that really improve people's lives. But not that fucking Metaverse from Facebook

GrapheneOS

I recently got myself a Google Pixel 4a - yes, actually a Google phone. But not because I think Google is so cool, but because I wanted to test the Google-free operating system GrapheneOS. Since the cell phone only cost €100 because the display was damaged, I thought I'd give it a try.

After it arrived I was able to use Graphene OS via the Website install, which was actually pretty easy. All I needed was the Chrome browser, which I briefly installed for this purpose and then deleted again. After that I just went through the instructions and about an hour later I had a clean GrapheneOS on my new phone (it took a bit longer to download…).

At first I was amazed at how simple it comes across, quite minimalist without any bullshit apps that you can't uninstall anymore, such as Gmail, Google Drive, Chrome, Google Photos, Google Duo, Google Play Movies, Huawei AppGallery, Huawei Pay etc .- have you ever noticed how little control you have over your phone?

If you get an Android phone these days, it's a data-gathering machine for Google - nothing else.

These are all apps on my Huawei Mate 20 Pro that I can't delete...

And what many may not understand is that big corporations like Google, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram are just as bad as climate change or pollution. Why?

Because they want people's attention! As much of it as possible, because then they can find out more about you (what you like, what you don't like, how long you watch, when you watch, when you click away, etc.) - and that's the data that makes money earn because personalized ads make you buy something.

here is a good article that explains this in detail.

Of course, this makes people not care about the planet or their fellow human beings, but about their new purchase or any other unnecessary bullshit...

That's why we live in a war for attention. If we really want to live in a world where there are fewer problems, then we need to live in reality and not in a Facebook/Instagram/TikTok or YouTube bubble.

Luckily there is an alternative to the Google Play Store F-Droid Store where there are thousands of apps that come with no trackers and no ads.

After installing it from the website I was able to install some cool apps. This is how it currently looks on my phone:

I currently have Paypal, Comdirect, Trustroots, BeWelcome, the TROM news and the trade-free directory as a web app (the Vanadium browser opens when I click on it).

That's how they see it TROM news and the trade-free directory out of:

It's still hard to completely ditch the other phone because there are many apps only available through the Google Play store such as DB Navigator, Flixbus, BlaBlaCar, photoTan and a few more, but hey, me can over Tusky or Fedilab access my Friendica instance which is pretty cool 🙂

Also, I've read on the website that it's possible to use the Play Store and install such apps, but I haven't delved deep enough into the topic yet. Anyway there is here to read more about it.

All in all, GrapheneOS is another step away from Google and having my own clean digital space that's closer to reality than living in TikTok or Snapchat bubbles. And if I can do it, then so can you! 😉

Ultimately, we have to ask ourselves what do we want technology for – to improve our lives and learn more about the world and ourselves, or to watch ads and be monitored?

On my travels in Australia and Asia I was very interested in permaculture and not really averse to technology, but not very interested in it. Over time I had to admit to myself that without science and technology we would still be living in caves and we can do amazing things with/through technology.

Just think of a modern operating room, laptops, cell phones and the internet! Yes, in our trade-based society, technology is misused for various purposes (advertising, surveillance, etc.), but that's why I'm also trying to create trade-free tools as an alternative. However, I am not averse to the 'holistic' lifestyle on a biodynamic farm or a self-sufficient farm and could also imagine it at some point 😉

Finally, I recommend that Article by Mike Kuketz about GrapheneOS for all those interested in technology 🙂

Guide to Friendica

I've been with Friendica for a while now and I recently got my own instance. What can I say? I absolutely love it! Also the developers behind Friendica (not only them) are super friendly 🙂

This article is about how you too can move to Friendica.

Create an account to try it out.

There are many "instances', so you can choose which one you want to join and now that I have my own instance you're welcome to create an account there. Of course you can also host your own instance on a server and through cool tools like yunohost it's getting easier and easier!

After registration you will receive an e-mail with the password. After you have logged in with it, you can change it in the settings.

Optimize your account.

You can now set up your account in the settings. It works much better than Facebook, is easier to understand and very clean. You can block content based on language and words, you can choose who can see your posts, and so on. It's up to you how you set it up. Take it easy. No stress. You don't have to do anything if you don't want to, and you can change things in time. it's your baby

Start following people and organizations.

That's what you're here for. But how can you find other people and organizations? Don't be like a hungry bear that goes into a house and wants to eat whatever it finds, and when it doesn't find much, it walks away. Be a nice, relaxed and sensible bear and you will get very good food and not get fat in this house. For example, for starters, you can too mir and ours TROM page follow. Then add more people. Let it grow slowly and organically. You can search people by interests (keywords) in the contact settings.

Let it grow slowly, and I mean that seriously. You can be taken advantage of by Facebook and the insane influx of information that engulfs your entire life. This way you can start fresh and meet new people. It's like moving from New York (Facebook) to a nice little village. You'll see, life is better there ;).

The great part that keeps me personally with Friendica.

Friendica opens the doors to pretty much every federal network. Suppose you find a Mastodon account in the wild. Copy the URL into your Friendica search bar and just follow it. Do the same for any other federated network. Now you can interact with these people (send private messages, see posts in your feed, comment, like, share posts, etc.).

Follow websites!

Yes! You can do that too. You can follow pretty much any website (since most have an RSS feed). Copy ours https://www.verzeichnis.handelsfrei.org/rss page or any other you like into the contact page and just follow it. You will see the posts in your feed whenever these websites post new material. How cool! You can also change the settings for each of these websites individually. For example, you can customize how often you get updates from them, whether you want to get notified when they post something new, or customize how the posts should look.

Sometimes, if those websites support it, you can see their entire articles in your feed so you don't have to go to their websites. I recommend you to select the “Get Info and Keywords” option so you can see their posts as a synopsis and link to the original article. Finally, if you wish, you can mirror the posts of these websites on your profile as forwarded posts. Or as your own posts.

Follow Twitter!

If you have a Twitter account, now is the time to stop using twitter.com and instead use your Friendica. Go to Settings - Social Networks and click on the Twitter tab. Connect to your Twitter account (easy - takes a few seconds). Now you should select "Allow posting to Twitter" and "Import the remote timeline". Why? Because now if you want to follow someone on twitter, you can just paste the twitter url, the whole thing, into the same contact page and then follow the twitter account. And you will see the posts in your timeline. Very easily.

You can reply to and interact with these Twitter accounts from Friendica. awesome

Follow the whole internet!

With the RSS-Bridge you can follow Youtube channels, WordPress plugin updates, daily Wikipedia articles or whatever you want: VK pages, Vimeo, photos from Unsplash, you can even follow Twitter users and pages without an account or even follow hashtags... .you can follow public Telegram groups or when new stuff is added to the BitTorrent network (e.g. if you want to know when a new episode from any docuseries you like is available on torrents). Follow sub-reddits, or even PornHub; follow the latest releases on FDroid and sooo much more. This RSS bridge is amazing and you can use it as a proxy to connect your Friendica to pretty much the whole internet.

So yes... slowly you can add friends to your account and follow websites/organizations/projects that you want to follow. Create a stream of what you love from across the web.

SEE YOU AT FRIENDICA!

TROMDienste - trade-free services for all people

I recently rented a server from Contabo because I YunoHost wanted to try and offer some services trade-free like we do in English trom.tf already do. What can I say? It's not only super cool, but also pretty easy 😉

What I needed for this:

1. A domain

You can register a domain with different providers. I have at that time dreamhost started and my domains are also still registered. For the domain tromdienste.de I pay 10€ per year.

2. A server

I have a virtual private server (VPS). I counted rented, which costs me 6€ a month. I installed Debian on my Contabo server (still version 10.0) to then dem tutorial on the site to install YunoHost on it.

You can also install YunoHost on a laptop and then just this tutorial from GNU/Linux.ch follow.

Note: Since my domain is registered with a different provider than the server, I had to change a few DNS settings. To make things easier, I would recommend choosing both from one provider.

Let’s go!

Once installed, it's super easy to add apps.

Create a subdomain, for example suche.example.de:

Then simply install the app on the domain. I always chose / as the path and didn't create an extra path.

Finally, I recommend installing the SSL certificate on the domain so that a secure connection can be established. This is also super easy:

That was it! Super easy right? 😉

In order to personalize the apps (change the design), I had to edit a few documents on the server. This wasn't easy and we're working on updating our changes with explanations git.trom.tf to publish.

Backups

Backups are important in case something happens to the server, so you should also take care of them:

I installed the App Archivist and manually added all the apps that should have a backup to the Backup_list.conf file.

You also have the option of taking a snapshot with Contabo.

Beyond that, however, I recommend storing the files in another location as well and not just relying on 1 location.

Why all this?

You may be wondering, why would you put so much effort into self-hosting your own digital space when there is Facebook, Google, Dropbox, etc.?

Well the thing is these big corporations are for profit and collect your data and run ads. Also, they are involved in a lot of scandals and create a lot of problems. If you want to know more about it, then read our book “The cause of most problems” or look at the YunoHost Website past.

So, you are cordially invited our TROM Services to use - there are no ads, no data collection, no pro versions or other bullshit. And if you don't like the TROM services, then host yourself! 😉

Thanks to the YunoHost team for providing such a cool tool - the standing order on Liberapay is set up 😉

By bike around Lake Constance :)

I recently came back from a bike ride around Lake Constance and it was really cool!

I was on the road for a total of 9 days, got over BeWelcome, Trust Roots and Warm Showers slept with different hosts and only needed around 40€ in total - not counting the 30€ for registering warmshowers).

From my home it started via Radolfzell, Stein am Rhein to Konstanz and from there via the Swiss side to Hohenems, then via Bregenz, Lindau, Friedrichshafen, Überlingen and Sipplingen back again 🙂

In total it was around 500 km and that is a rough drawing of the route.

Here are some pictures from the first days:

It was always very hot, so I made sure that I was out and about a lot, especially in the mornings and evenings, and that I either chilled somewhere in the shade in the hammock at noon or lay in the sun and cooled off in the lake 😉

I had a tent and a sleeping bag with me, but I didn't have the tent at all and only used the sleeping bag once because I could always sleep with hosts from Trustroots, BeWelcome or Warmshowers. These are platforms that work like couchsurfing, but now they do has become commercial. Maybe you've never heard of it, so I want to share a few experiences here, which are also some of my highlights:

Appenzeller country

Here I slept with a woman who had a farm in Ukraine and above Workaway has accepted volunteers from all over the world to help her with various things.

Not only did I get a place to sleep and food, I also got an insight into their lives and the Appenzell region:

Sankt Gallen and the Rheinspitz

Sankt Gallen is a city like any other (a lot of traffic, noise, shops, etc.), but there I went swimming at a pond and had a nice view of the city. I was also at the Rheinspitz, but it wasn't really worth it, so there's a nice view, since you drive quite a bit to the middle of the lake, but that's an extra 10 km (there and back):

Vorarlberg

In the Vorarlberg region in Austria, I had a great host with whom I was not only in turmoil, but also on the “Hohe Kugel” mountain at 1645 m. We then ran up 1200 meters in altitude – I ran down again and he was there flown down with the paraglider:

Our trade-based society

On a trip like this you get to know the world more and more, be it in Nepal or around Lake Constance - the effects of our trade-based society are noticeable everywhere, sometimes more, sometimes less.

waste

You've probably heard of food waste before, but it's still interesting to see only a fraction of it. Here is some of the groceries I saved with one of my hosts in just 1 night from just 2 supermarkets:

We made pretty yummy things out of it 😉

Another example of massive waste is all the boats I've seen. We produce an abundance of pretty much everything and most people don't have access to it because they either don't have the money or the time (because they're probably working). And so it happens that hundreds, even thousands of boats are lying around in various ports on Lake Constance and are either used very rarely or maybe not at all:

Armament industry at Lake Constance

Interestingly, there are dozens of companies in the Lake Constance region that earn their money in this industry (Those). Tanks, weapons, ammunition, etc. - that throws this scenic region in a pretty ugly light.

But what brings money, brings money... and secures jobs 😉 this way of thinking is so backwards. Let's be honest.

destruction, pollution, etc.

Of course, as far as I know, there are no longer any original forests or landscapes. Almost everything is taken over by us humans, changed, destroyed. Some bike paths are located next to roads and the traffic is annoying. How much cooler would it be if we just had fewer self-driving cars and also more trains and buses, all freely available!

Work, work, build houses

That describes the Swabian culture very well. But it's the same on the Swiss side, where everything works like "Swiss clockwork" and it's guaranteed that many people in Vorarlberg are also interested in making more and more money. The economy must be booming...

A Trustroots host told me how meritocracy is for most people – when people meet, work and business are almost always talked about. If you don't have a respectable job and don't go to work, then you are worthless in the eyes of society. People define themselves by their job, completely forgetting that they are human.

The European Championship 2021

The European Football Championship is taking place at the moment and has been since my bike tour. I haven't seen a game and do you think I missed something?

I know what it's like to love and watch football. I used to play football myself, watched the Bundesliga, Champions League and national team games. But is it really that important, interesting and relevant that Germany beat Portugal 4-2?

We have a Book about football and you probably know it yourself - millions of salaries for the players, Corruption, pressure to perform, painkiller abuse etc.

Of course football can also bring people together and often people from different parts of the world play together, but nevertheless this sport is completely overrated in our culture and is so blatantly hyped because many people earn their money with it (footballers themselves, coaches, managers, all employees various clubs, TV stations, associations etc.).

Ultimately, there are 22 players who run after a ball and otherwise bring nothing relevant. So calm down and think about it, is it really the end of the world when your favorite team loses?

In any case, I found my bike tour more exciting than watching the EM and/or betting on the games like thousands of others do every day 😉

Finally, here are panorama pictures, which I always find particularly cool and which actually turned out really nice:

Have fun and enjoy life!

I recently came back from Spain because I was visiting Tio and Sasha to film for the TROM 2 documentary and what can I say? Spain is really nice!

I was on the Costa Brava in a smaller town north of Barcelona that looks like this:

The trip was no problem regarding Corona. With a PCR test, I was able to fly to Barcelona and from there continue by bus.

Not only were we productive because we finished recording and I worked on some other things, but we also had a cool time because we did a lot of things outside: we went hiking, camping, swimming in the Mediterranean, kayaking, flying kites (pretty cool with a lot of wind on the beach), playing cards, making pizza and just having a good time:

dav

I keep thinking to myself that life can be so simple and so beautiful, and I keep coming back to our trade-based society, which makes it so difficult for many people to live a good life.

Tio is the living proof. I have never met such a nice person who is so curious about the world and just does good things. He creates books, videos and podcasts on complex subjects to make them easy to understand, constantly educates himself through documentaries and news about the world and he would always help you without asking anything in return.

But since he offers everything he makes trade-free, he can hardly survive in our society. In fact, he is currently as good as broke and if that doesn't say everything about our society, then I don't know what does.

It's sad to see that such people who just do good things have to struggle to survive while at the same time being influencers on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, (e.g. Lisa and Lena or BibisBeautyPalace) get an incredible amount of attention and recognition (for mostly trivial things).

I am deeply disappointed myself in our society which aims to sell more and more and keep you enslaved in a job instead of learning about this amazing reality and just being a nice one Mensch to be.

Even if you study marine biology at a university, you have to pass exams and studying is always connected to the idea of performance...

I've also heard of students who have successfully studied archeology and then had to take a job in the supermarket because they couldn't find any other way to earn money. I think there are many such examples out there.

Am I crazy or our society?!

How can it be that someone earns a lot of money by playing games on the computer and filming themselves doing it? Or buying and selling cars and making millions? (Link) Or collects data about you and then sells it to advertisers (data broker)?

And in contrast I just want to learn more about the world, help others and not sell anything, but now I have to see how I can make money to survive...

Am I crazy now or society?

If you don't have a job and earn money, then you are worthless in the eyes of society. You are told to have a career as a mechatronics engineer, bank clerk, carpenter or manager.

What would you like to become? everyone asks you when you go to school.

Maybe soccer star? Maybe manager? Or lawyer? Maybe just rich?

But what if I don't want to be one of those?

What if I just want to be a nice, chilled and helpful person trying different things with no expectations of making a big career out of it?

What if I just want to be happy?

That's exactly why I try to stay away from all the bullshit. I hardly ever buy new clothes, I don't have a Netflix or Spotify subscription, I don't have the latest cell phone or a car.

Still, I'm doing really well and I'm happy. And that's the most important thing, isn't it? 🙂

Have fun and let go

What really matters in life?

For me personally, things are important, such as going surfing or snowboarding, meeting other people and learning new things, helping other people and/or organizations, traveling, hiking, camping, swimming or watching documentaries and more about to learn the world. And just to have fun too. And to do things spontaneously. And to be open to life 🙂

If you were to ask an alien if they would want to live here on planet earth, but ONLY IF they have a job and work 40 hours a week. Do you think he would do that?????

Our society sucks and I think this video illustrates it pretty well:

Because of this:

Don't take life and especially our society too seriously, take it easy and have fun, go out into nature, look at the stars and have a good time 😉

For example, I've thought about cycling around Lake Constance this summer, or hitchhiking in Germany and at Trust Roots- or BeWelcome-stay with hosts.

I'm sure there are still some adventures waiting for me and I'm really looking forward to it 😉

My goals

Of course I also have goals and I once wrote in a blog article (which I deleted again) that my dream is to train as a carpenter and then live and travel in a van.

After my internship in a carpentry shop in Switzerland (which was very, very hard), I thought about doing something else instead...

My next thought was to do something in the IT field, because on the one hand I'm interested in technology and computers, or rather servers and Linux, and I want to learn more about it. And I could certainly use the skills that I will learn in such an apprenticeship to, for example, Friendica- Instance hosting or other services that we are currently on trom.tf host. I would also really like to translate trom.tf into German and offer trade-free services online 🙂

So I applied to various companies and in September I will do an apprenticeship as an IT specialist for system integration in Dresden.

This also means that I have a more or less regular daily routine, I will be given assignments and have to write exams. But I think that I can definitely gain valuable experience that might be of great use to me later.

After the apprenticeship, I might still live in a van or go traveling, I don't know yet and it depends a lot on how the world develops.

In any case, I will buy a wakeboard and wakeboard regularly, enjoy the offline life more and of course continue to keep the projects up to date.

Why am I doing what I'm doing?

When I think about this question like this, it reminds me of Australia or Asia, being on beautiful beaches and wondering what I want to do with my life.

I could travel my whole life or start a family and work in a job for 40 years and live a normal life or I could try to be an astronaut or study business and try to be a manager and so much more .

All possibilities are open to me and I could have a great career. But I don't want that because I've been traveling and I've seen and learned that there are so many problems in our unjust world and if we only think of ourselves we'll perish...

That's why I can't and don't want to normal life to have. I don't want to become jaded to all the unbelievable things of our world, but to face life with astonishment and curiosity.

If in the corona pandemic For profit reasons, the patents for the corona vaccine were not released become when the State more and more surveillance measures implements and if most people on the planet are enslaved in a bullshit job and we destroy the planet à la "after me the flood of meaning", then I just don't think that's cool. Ne, it's really not cool diggah!

I'm now more or less forced to play the game and do this training because unfortunately I don't get enough support, but I try as best as I can not to let it affect me negatively, but to draw positive things from it. Of course I could also work in other jobs, but I think it's hard to find something at the moment and I don't want to be a waiter anymore either! 😉

Conclusion

But I don't need to believe in a god or open my "chakras" when I know that billions of neutrinos are 'flying' through my body every second and that we and everything we see around us are made of atoms.

Of course that doesn't mean I'm not having fun, quite the opposite, I like to juggle or slackline, do some exercises and sports from time to time, listen to electronic music because I celebrate music, but what we need are more educated people who understand where the problems in our society come from and do something about it. It is precisely in this direction that we are trying to advance with the TROM project. No pseudoscience, no wishful thinking, no utopia, but facts about our world and solutions.

I think this idea is really powerful and if you really understand what it's about then you can't do nothing.

Also, I can't think of a better idea to change our society or steer it in a more sane direction than to make trade obsolete and educate people and give them free access to what they need and want.

I myself would never ask for anything in return if I were to help you.

That's why I do what I do.

What does it mean to be human?

Was bedeutet das alles:

Was dann?

TROMjaro on the Dell XPS 15 (7590)

I still remember 2012 when I bought my Macbook Pro 13″ with Retina display and a 128 GB SSD hard drive. Since then I have always used the Macbook. Initially with the operating system from Apple (MacOS), until I then decided Linux to use.

Our customized version of Manjaro Linux – TROMyear – runs flawlessly on the Macbook and there have never been any major problems. However, the Macbook Pro with an i5 processor and 4 GB RAM is no longer quite sufficient for me these days. Simple web surfing still works very well, but the device quickly reaches its limits for more demanding tasks such as video editing. Unfortunately, the 4 GB of RAM cannot be upgraded either. Partly because of this, but also because I want a larger display, I decided to buy a new laptop.

After hours of research, I made up my mind to buy either a Tuxedo or Dell laptop. Dell laptops are quite well known, well compatible with Linux operating systems and also of high quality depending on the price range you are looking at. In addition, you can expand the RAM memory and/or the hard disk in many devices, which is another plus point.

Tuxedo is a company that specializes in tailor-made Linux computers, which means the computers are tuned to run Linux operating systems flawlessly.

Tuxedo Pulse 15 Gen1

I decided first that Tuxedo Pulse 15 Gen1 with a Ryzen 7 4800H processor, 32 GB of RAM and a 500 GB SSD hard drive. TROMjaro runs perfectly on the device and the device is very, very good. What bothered me personally is the clattering ClickPad, which works, but I didn't like it at all. Compared to my 2012 Macbook Pro, this clickpad was cheap. The Retina display of the Macbook is simply nicer because it has a higher resolution and everything is displayed sharper.

on the left the Tuxedo Pulse 15″ and on the right the Macbook Pro 13″

Dell Inspion 15 7506 2-in-1-System

So next I tried the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series - 2-in-1 System (7506) and tested TROMjaro on it. This laptop has an impressive 4K touch display, 1 TB SSD and 16 GB SSD and comes with the latest generation i7 processor. TROMjaro runs very well on the device, but some functions are limited or can still be improved, such as the pen that comes with the device, which does not have all the functions under TROMjaro as under Windows, or the touch display, which is not quite as good how it runs on Windows. However, it is remarkable that TROMjaro runs on the device at all and how well. Almost everything works out-of-the-box - without installing a driver or anything and that's really impressive!

Dell XPS 15 7590

Testing the Inspiron has made me realize what I want from a computer. It has to be fast, have a lot of memory and look good. And that's how I ended up with the Dell XPS 15. The XPS 15 comes in a variety of configurations and I chose the 7590 model. This isn't the latest model, but it does come with more ports, isn't as expensive as the newer models, and has the webcam at the top of the screen instead of the bottom like the previous ones. My XPS 15 has an i7 9750H processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD storage, an Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU and an amazing 4K OLED display!

I bought the device via ebay classifieds and installed TROMjaro directly on it. What can I say? In my opinion it is the perfect combination. Here is the tutorial on how I installed and set up TROMjaro:

First steps

First of all, backup all your data to an external hard drive so it's safe in case something goes wrong 😉

Follow the instructions on the TROMjaro Websiteto flash tromjaro to a USB stick.

Next, you need to do some BIOS setup to boot (boot) into tromjaro. To do this, shut down your computer and hold down the F2 or F12 key while booting up, or press one of the keys in quick succession.

Now you can choose to enter BIOS.

Im BIOS

There are 3 things to do here.

  1. Go to “System Configuration” and select “AHCI” at “SATA Operation” to make the hard disk available for tromjaro.
  2. Click on the “Secure Boot” item and on the “Secure Boot Enable” box to disable Secure Boot so that you can boot into TROMjaro.
  3. Under the item “Fastboot” under “POST Behavior” select “Thorough” to prevent sporadic boot failures.

Next, shut down the computer, insert the USB stick and press and hold F12 again while booting to select the USB stick so that TROMjaro boots.

Now you can choose the language and the keyboard model:

Depending on the device, you can select "Boot with open source drivers" or "Boot with proprietary drivers", i.e. either boot with open-source drivers or proprietary drivers. Due to the NVIDIA graphics card, I selected “Boot with proprietary drivers”. The drivers can also be changed later and installed afterwards.

Im Live-Modus

TROMjaro is now running on your computer from the USB stick. I directly changed the screen background (right click + change background) and set the touchpad:

Now you can test everything that should be tested. The touchpad, the keyboard, WLAN, Bluetooth, webcam, speakers - everything.

If everything works and you want to install TROMjaro, then click on the “Install Manjaro Linux” button.

Die Installation

Now you'll be guided through the installation setup and it's all pretty much self-explanatory. Select the language, region, time zone, keyboard model and hard drive on which TROMjaro should be installed. I don't recommend installing tromjaro alongside another operating system as that could cause problems. I myself had both Linux and MacOS on my Macbook Pro for some time and it worked without any issues, although I wouldn't recommend it.

If you select “Erase Disk” there are still the options “No swap”, “Swap (with hibernation)”, Swap (without hibernation)” and “Use paging file”. Swap can be used as additional RAM memory - for example, on my Macbook Pro with 4 GB RAM I selected "Swap (with hibernation)" so that 4 GB of the SSD hard drive was used as additional RAM memory. Therefore, I also recommend the “Swap (with hibernation)” option so that the system runs more smoothly (a lot of RAM is always good anyway 😉 )

After entering your username and a password, you can click “Install Now” and TROMjaro will be installed on your computer.

After installation

Note: TROMjaro makes a local backup with the "timeshift-autosnap" tool before each update. If you don't want this, enter timeshift under “Add/Remove Software” and remove the “timeshift-autosnap” package:

Next, install any language packs that are still missing. To do this, simply enter “Manjaro settings” when you press the Windows (or the cmd key on Apple computers), click on language packs and “Install packs”.

Settings and Optimizations

You just got to know the Manjaro settings. Then there's the 'normal' settings, where you'll find Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, language and region, audio, power, screens, etc.:

and optimizations:

Here you can configure TROMjaro as you want.

There you can change the system font, change the theme, use a different icon set, expand the workspaces and and and. Make TROMjaro look like you want. You can even like TROMjaro ChromeOS, MacOS or Windows make it look.

Finally, there are the Dash-to-Dock settings, which you open by right-clicking on the Dash-to-Dock, and the Gnome Extensions, where you can configure further settings:

Touchpad Gestures:

You're probably used to the fact that the touchpad allows you to control other things with various gestures, making the laptop experience intuitive. You don't have to do without that with TROMjaro either. By installing the Touché app, some gestures also become possible on TROMjaro. We will integrate this app into TROMjaro by default, so you don't have to install it separately.

In fact, to activate Touché you have to use the terminal once and type the following:

sudo systemctl enable touchegg.service

sudo systemctl start touchegg

For this I recommend the GNOME extension X11 Gestures (which you here can install) to use other useful functions in connection with Touchegg.

Now the only question left is how to install apps on tromjaro. There are 2 options for this:

1. TROMjaro Software Center

We offer over 600 trade-free apps in our own software center. You can install an app by simply clicking on the “Install” button and then “Apply”.

2. Add/Remove Software

Otherwise you can install apps via Add/Remove Programs. You can also uninstall apps here:

Dell XPS 15 settings

I think I've covered quite a bit, but if you have a Dell XPS 15 with an OLED display, there are still a few things to do. here you will find the entry in the Arch Linux Wiki, where everything is described. The most important:

Install the icc-brightness package so you can control the backlight. From Linux kernel 5.12 (currently 5.10) this will work out of the box.

Power Settings:

My Dell XPS 15 uses a lot of energy, which means the battery doesn't last very long. To change that, there are a few changes you can make. I did 2 things:

  1. “apparmor=1 security=apparmor udev.log_priority=3 enable_fbc=1 enable_psr=1 disable_power_well=0 mem_sleep_default=deep” zu “GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT” hinzugefügt.
To do this, edit the “grub” document as admin (by right-clicking on it and selecting “Edit as admin”):
Nvidia graphics card

The "Boot with proprietary drivers" automatically installed the correct drivers, with which I can use my NVIDIA GTX 1650. However, I have to open an app in the terminal with the command “prime-run” + name of the app (e.g. prime-run kdenlive). There are several ways to switch between the internal and external GPU (e.g. optimus-manager or bumblebee), but I'll read more into the subject. Anyway there is here more information about it.

Otherwise that was all. Maybe over time I'll add things that were still missing, could be improved, but I think I've covered quite a lot.

If you have further questions, you can find more information in the Manjaro Forum, regarding TROMjaro you can also contact us in the Chat write, there is always someone available.

What is also important:

Manjaro is a rolling release, which means there are regular updates, which of course we also carry out for TROMjaro. On the "Releases' page you can find the latest updates as well as things to consider to keep your system up to date.

What's another interesting fact is that you can move from one laptop to another on Linux pretty much easily, just by copying your personal folder to a hard drive and then copying it to the new laptop.

Tip: By pressing Ctrl+H in your personal folder you can also copy individual configurations (folders) of the applications that are on your computer. These are mostly located in .config - This can be useful if you are migrating to a new system and don't want to carry old leftover files/garbage (e.g. from apps that you have installed and uninstalled again) with you.

So I copied the configurations of my most important apps from my old laptop to the new one and not everything else (apart from the normal files like pictures, documents, videos, downloads, music).

last words

Finally, I would like to emphasize that the most important aspect of TROMjaro is that the operating system is trade-free. There is no data collection as with MacOS or Windows, no advertisements on the web or other trade, because we focus on the people who use TROMjaro.

With TROMjaro, we want to give you a tool that allows you to move freely in the digital world without trading your data, attention, currency or anything else.

With TROMjaro we want to point to a future that is free - namely trade-free!

PS Thanks to the Manjaro community and all the people who code free software, which makes it possible for us to offer TROMjaro in the first place. That's the beauty of free software - anyone can build on what already exists and make something new/different out of it.
